How to Prepare Yourself for Your Headshot Session

Headshots, or portaraits of you, are all about one thing.  You. You are proud of your business, what you are building or creating, and the work you are doing.  You want your product or service to be able to stand out, be noticed, AND you want to speak to your audience and let them get to know you.  You just need the right images of you to connect you with that specific audience through social media, ads, or your website.  Sounds easy enough, right? Just schedule a session and have your photo taken. NO BIG DEAL.

But I know.  It IS a big deal.  It IS hard.

It's hard to make time for just you and make yourself a priority. It's easy to put everyone else's needs first.

It's hard to let go of all the little insecurities and beliefs we have about the way we look. It's easier to just hide behind the camera.

It's hard to be vulnerable and on display for everyone to see. It's easy to be afraid and feel like you won't be enough.

I get it.  I really do.  But I want you to know you are worth it. You are enough. And you can do this!

So here is my little pep talk to you to get you in front of the camera, along with a few tips to help you make it happen.

  • Make it a celebration.  Celebrate you! Make it a gift to yourself or act of gratitude for all your hard work and accomplishing the goals you have set for yourself.
  • Tell me all about you.  The more I know about you the more I can help you to connect with your audience. I want to know why you do what you do and why it is so important to you.
  • Relax!  Do whatever you need to do to be yourself before your session.  Make the experience into a little self-care time for yourself. Go for a walk or out to lunch with a friend before or after. Do what makes you happy and will encourage you to show up as yourself in the most authentic way.
  • Wear what you are comfortable and confident in.  If you aren't sure what color to wear, look in your closet.  What colors are you drawn to?  What do you wear most often?  Those are the colors that will help you feel like you, and will help you feel relaxed, comfortable, and confident.  Keep in mind that this is about capturing you in a natural way, so you will be moving and walking and doing what is most naturally you.
  • Bring a friend or loved one along.  Sometimes your favorite people can bring out the best in you. They can make you feel comfortable and confident and can help bring out natural smiles and emotions.

These photos are from a recent session with Julie.  Julie needed photos of herself for work and social media. She really wanted the photos but was very apprehensive about the session and admitted to me beforehand that she was very uncomfortable with the process. Here is what Julie had to say about our time together.

~We met in downtown Littleton and we chatted a bit. I felt an immediate connection to her. She was warm and funny; I felt comfortable. She took pictures as we were talking and laughing. She snapped pictures of my daughter and my daughter and me chatting and laughing. Nothing felt like a studio portrait; Amy didn’t ask me to do anything that didn't feel natural. Overall, it was completely painless and actually fun. The pictures reflect how we felt that day and I am very happy with the way they turned out. Amy truly captured the best version of me. For that, I am grateful.~
